Green credit and bank risk-taking: Evidence from China
Abstract
This study examines the impact of green credit on bank risk-taking. Using sample data from 57 Chinese commercial banks from 2008 to 2021, our study reveals a significant inverted U-shaped relationship between green credit and bank risk-taking. This suggests that bank risk-taking consistently decreases as green credit expands and surpasses a certain threshold. We also learn that the regional level of green development and the degree of government policy supporting in that region negatively moderate the inverted U-shaped relationship between green credit and the risk-taking of commercial banks, shifting the inflection point to the right and reducing its strength.
