Corporate political activities and climate change exposures

Abstract

Over the past few decades, the world has witnessed heightened intensity and frequency of natural catastrophes, and climate change is considered as the main vehicle driving these events. Being major contributors to climate change, firms are under strict scrutiny to serve environmental justice and reduce their environmental externalities. However, more often than not, firms decide to lobby against environmentalism by spending enormous amounts in political activities – potentially wasting vital resources that otherwise could have been invested in environmentally friendly projects. Ultimately, this diversion of resources could leave firms exposed to climate change risks. This study thus aims to examine the relationship between corporate political activities (CPA) and climate change exposure (CCE). We create a comprehensive dataset of US firms and executives by hand-collecting CPA information from OpenSecrets. Using a recent and innovative measure of CCE, we find a significant positive association between CPA and CCE, indicating that firms with higher CPA demonstrate increased CCE. The channel test reveals that high CPA firms exhibit significantly lower eco-innovation. Finally, in cross-sectional analysis, we find that CPA-CCE relationship is attenuated by stricter monitoring mechanism via high analyst following and institutional ownership. We also check the robustness and address endogeneity in several ways. We discuss important policy implications of our study.
