The Impact of Remoteness on the Financial Performance of Indigenous Corporations: Empirical Evidence from Australia

Abstract

Drawing on financial performance reporting and resource dependence theory (RDT), this article examines the impact of geographic remoteness on the financial performance of Indigenous corporations, regulated by the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC) in Australia. Using panel data analysis to examine data from 2018 to 2022 with 3,602 observations, the results show that increased remoteness correlates with lower return on assets and reduced assets and leverage, despite incentives to counter the impact of remoteness.
Our study contributes to the under-researched role of geographical distance in financial performance of Indigenous Corporations, whilst extending literature on emerging Indigenous research.
