Modern Slavery Disclosure in Business, Management, and Accounting Literature: Bibliometric and Content Analysis

Abstract

Modern slavery reporting legislations introduced worldwide have led to an increasing trend in thoroughly exploring the MSD area empirically and theoretically. This study aims to present a comprehensive knowledge map of the intellectual structure of the field of study of MSD literature based on 40 MSD articles sourced using Scopus and Web of Science databases. A bibliometric analysis and content analysis method was employed by analyzing articles published between 2016 and 2023, using the VOSViewer and Biblioshiny. The study provides an overview of articles, authors, the most influential journals, and themes of research. The content analysis suggests critical concerns about the volume and quality of MSDs submitted by the firms in the US, UK, and Australia which may also lead to a risk of endorsing merely symbolic compliance to modern slavery acts. The study proposes future research directions and provides implications for organizations, top management, and policymakers to ensure social sustainability.
