Plenary Presentation

Biography

There are few people better qualified than Alex Walsh to speak to the incredible challenges, rewards and opportunities that Australia’s submarine industry will present for today’s students over coming decades – and that Subs in Schools provides an exciting taste of. A qualified nuclear engineer, Alex brings close to 40 years’ experience in the nuclear submarine and power sectors to his role leading submarine engineering capability at ASC, the company that built, and now sustains, Australia’s Collins Class submarines. He joined ASC in January 2022 from Sellafield Limited, the UK government entity that manages its Sellafield nuclear site, where he was Head of Planning Implementation. Prior to that, Alex held a wide range of leadership positions in engineering, project management and nuclear commissioning, safety and licensing across the UK, France and Australia. Most notably, he is a former Head of Nuclear Construction at BAE Systems UK, in which capacity he led the team that built the nuclear reactors still powering the Royal Navy’s Astute-class submarines. He also spent time as BAE UK’s Head of Nuclear Safety Engineering, with responsibility for leading nuclear authorisation, and ensuring safe Astute-class fuelling, commissioning and power range testing.
