Biography

Commencing his career in Merchant Navy as a seagoing Marine Engineer after graduating with a bachelor degree (BSc) in Maritime Studies (Ship Technology), Sammar has an accomplished engineering career of 27 years. This includes 19 years in the commercial and defence maritime industries, and significant experience in power generation and downstream oil and gas. Holding two post-graduate degrees, in the disciplines of Maritime Engineering and Petroleum Technology respectively, Sammar is a Fellow and a Chartered Professional Engineer of the Institution of Engineers Australia (Engineers Australia). He is registered at National Engineering Register of Engineers Australia in four areas of practice: Mechanical; Naval Architecture; Asset Management; and Leadership and Management. Sammar is also a Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, a Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council, UK, and a European Engineer registered with Engineers Europe (previously European Federation of National Engineering Associations). Sammar also holds a Marine Engineer Officer - Class 1 certificate of competency and certification as an Accredited Marine Surveyor for domestic commercial vessels, both issued by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. In the area of practice of Asset Management, Sammar is also formally qualified as a Certified Senior Practitioner in Asset Management and Certified Asset Management Assessor. Sammar strongly believes that continual connection with academia should be part of an engineer’s career journey. He is currently a sessional academic of maritime engineering with Edith Cowan University and a member of the Curtin University School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering advisory board. He also volunteers to support the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, being a member of its Australian Division Council.
